Mother’s Day: Peace for Piece of the Pie

“Twinkle” Marie Manning with Jane Adams, Regional Director for Rep. Niki Tsongas

Each year on the Friday before Mother’s Day, activists and lobbyists all over America armed with pie, charts, statistics and passion, arrange to meet with their Congresspeople.

In 2013 Twinkle was the 3rd Congressional District Team Leader for The Massachusetts Campaign for a U.S. Department of Peace.  Pat Simon, our State Coordinator, asked her to schedule a day for a small group of us to go to Lowell to lobby for peace and share pie.  So, of course she did just so.

This tradition is a gentle approach to serious conversations.

The pie is symbolic of the “piece of the pie” that the Campaign for a Department of Peacebuilding seeks for the establishment of cabinet-level Department of Peace, beginning with an office of Peace.  Congresswoman Barbara Lee re-introduced the bill this year.

It turns out that our Congresswoman, Nikki Tsongas, was out of town.  But Jane Adams, Regional Director for Rep. Niki Tsongas,  graciously met with the peace activists.

Twinkle gathered a small group of local constituents together and met in her Lowell, MA office.

This is the 5th year their district “shared pie” with local representatives.  This year much of our focus for the meeting was on the Youth PROMISE Act.
