The Flower Celebration created by Norbert & Maja Čapek has long been an honored tradition of Unitarian congregations. Under the then name the “Society of the Free Fellowship” Maja and Norbert co-facilitated the first documented “Consecration of the Flowers” – aka “Flower Celebration”, as it is known in Czech Republic. In 1940, Maja facilitated the first Flower Communion service in the United States in Cambridge, MA.
Over the years, I’ve officiated many Flower Celebrations, often called a “Flower Communion” in UU Churches. I’ve been fortunate to have various members in congregations offer tidbits of their past and even offer documentation from their own research. Below is a gallery of documents one church member gave me including about Norbert’s time in concentration camp.
Below that are a few of the sermons I’ve given over the years.
Below that are links to Flower Communion sermons by other ministers and laypeople.
And, at the very bottom is my newest children’s book that is debuting Spring 2026 “Flower Celebration, a Mora Mulberry Story”

Rev. Dan Harper’s Flower Communion sermon where he cites recollections of Isa Fiserova’s – who was present at the original Flower Celebration in Prague.
Lucille LePage Flower Communion summary where I found more quotes of Norberts.
Rev. Duffy Peet sermon where he shared that Nazi court records show Norbert was killed because his message was “…too dangerous to the Reich [for him] to be allowed to live.”
