“Walk fearlessly into the house of mourning

for grief is just love squaring up to its oldest enemy;

and after all these mortal human years

love is up to the challenge.”

finite mindfulness

“Mindfulness when struggling with addiction means doing things in a finite way in the moment. My son Daniel says it’s being peaceful.”

– Angela Einstein

I love this quote! Angela is a crusader when it comes to helping heal addiction and her philosophy is as surprising as it is unique. (check out her website) and see how she is connecting celebrities to help with the mission of Rock the Record Straight™)
I am going to be thinking about how her idea of finite mindfulness relates to life practices in general whether struggling with addictions or simply seeking peace-of-mind and transforming negative feelings and thoughts.
Many spiritual practices turn our attention towards the infinite, which can help us see the larger picture of Oneness, yet it can sometimes also serve as a spiritual bypassing of sorts, which can become a habitual distraction, addictive in detaching (or hiding) rather than coping with what is present in our lives.

Bringing it to the finite perspective – which is truly what we have in each given moment –
is not only more manageable, but also practical in a spiritual sense because it opens the door to deep gratitude for the life we have, even if we are struggling in the moment, we are present to it and able to do something about it.
Thank you Ange – I needed this gem of inspiration today!

This. This. This!

Regardless of how we personally interpret or experience the Holy.  Regardless of which individual causes we are most inspired to dedicate time to.  Regardless of where we place our priorities on our day-to-day lives.  When any among our human family are adrift in turbulent waters of life, spiritually or physically, we are each Called to form such a chain as this.  Because we are each other’s saviors.  That is why we are here together on this planet.

How We Gather + On Being + Sue Phillips!

So excited for Sue Phillips! She is joining the How We Gather team which addresses social isolation and spiritual poverty among millennials. And On Being joins the effort as core partners.  On Being is a social enterprise with an award winning radio show at its heart that opens up the animating questions at the center of human life: What does it mean to be human, and how do we want to live?

Churched?

Above pictured UU Church in Sangerville, Maine – JOIN US!

More than a social club, Church can be one of our spiritual homes.  Intentionally it can be where we find the most sacred place of belonging, where our inner light recognizes and is recognized by those in our presence. It is where our whole-broken selves, our gifts and our flaws, are accepted and rejoiced in. It can be where our Beloved Community resides and grow from. Where, with our chosen actions and activities, we can bless and be blessings to each other, and to our larger community. Not just the principle or ideal of “belonging” but the active creation and cultivation of an environment that allows genuine belonging to occur. The place where we bear witness to each other, are held tenderly in difficult times and are accompanied during celebratory occasions. It is where we not merely know of each other, but, rather, have the opportunity and responsibility to really know each other.

This applies wherever you gather in spiritual community, by whichever name you call it.

Please Stop the Violence

I have a lot of friends across this country who are Republicans.  We may not agree on all things – But Not a single one of them is a racist, a misogynist, a bigot, or any of the other things they are being called because they voted for Donald Trump.  Each one is a decent human being, loving and kind and deserves to be treated with respect. I am appalled and dismayed at how many of my fellow liberals are reacting to the election results in violence.

Violence comes in many forms – it begins in our hearts and minds, expands to our words and actions.

Those behaving violently by inciting riots, causing physical harm to people and property and also by verbally beating down those who voted differently including  via social media – – none of this is ok.

It needs to stop.  The violence in all its forms needs to stop.

Be the Peace you want to exist in the world! Please.
